Inspiring Conversations with Odessa Young of Ohthatsodessa.com LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Odessa Young

Hi Odessa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story began with the life I was born into, which lead me to being the helper I am today. I have faced and battled low-income, violence, abandonment, neglect, heartbreak and devastating loss. I have grown tremendously and my character was enhanced during each period of trial. Today, I smile and offer assistance to those who have lost or never discovered their voice. I advocate for the betterment of each individual I am blessed to work with. I work daily to provide a solid emotional base of growth for my 3 beautiful daughters Amaria, Cyrenity and Colaiya; through transparency, love and support. I have fought to get here and I will keep taking one step at a time to get me to my next. The scripture I live by is 2 Cor 12:9 “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness (paraphrased).”

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been numerous struggles along the way including my most recent struggle; which was the death of my mom on June 2, 2024. My life has shifted yet again as I work to figure out what life needs to or should look like. My dad died in 1997 then my maternal grandmother on Mother’s Day 1998. My mom and I were in an almost fatal car accident the same day Mother’s Day 1998. I suffered a stroke in 2017, went through a divorce in 2020 and rerouted my life at age 40. I have battled multiple health issues/crises which caused me to need physical therapy, chiropractic treatment and various medications. I have preserved through each one of these milestones to evolve into the woman writing this. I also dealt with a miscarriage during my marriage and often wonder what the child I never got to see would look like and achieve if he or she was still alive. It almost funny when I type these words because I think overcoming adversity should have been my middle name. I just smile, cry, take breaks as needed; then tap back in to life and continue flourishing.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Ohthatsodessa.com LLC is my business which encompasses all of my roles as a professional. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Author, Poet and Wellness Coach. I spend most of my time providing mental health therapy to assist individuals with becoming the best version of him/her self. I work with those who deal with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, adjusting to life changing and who are experiencing grief/loss. I am the most proud of being able to be a living example of how life can turn out differently. I used my circumstances to help push me to be a better person and help those around me. I help others find and use their voice to have a higher quality of life. I work to break the stigma associated with mental illness along with decreasing barriers to treatment options. I work in multiple locations and provide both virtual and in-person sessions. I am paneled with insurance panels, EAPs and offer self-pay options. I am also a published author and poet with books available for direct purchase and on Amazon (O Survival by Grace and Poetic Outpour). What sets me apart is being more than just a therapist, author, poet or coach. I am this and that. I take joy in knowing I can reach people on different levels and work with them on different types of goals.

What were you like growing up?
I was outspoken, aggressive, quiet, shy at times and the loudest person in the room depending on the day or who I was around. I was more extroverted and gained most of my energy from being around people. I was interested in going to law school, interior design or being a race car driver as my first set of career interests. Then I was lead to the field of social services and counseling. I now take pride in being able to live out my passion to help make the world better one person at a time; in whatever way I am blessed to help.
