Today we’d like to introduce you to Debbie Trout

Hi Debbie , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
After graduating from college I worked for a few marketing and advertising agencies. After a few years I realized this was not the best setting for me and I wanted more freedom to work with people and their brands directly. I then started my own branding studio, Trout Design Co. and have been in business for almost 7 years now. We have had the opportunity to create designs and identities for a variety of brands and businesses, spanning from local to international, including non-profits.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Running my business has had its challenges, especially since we are a small team (just me and my husband). This meant wearing a lot of different hats but over the years we have developed a clear and defined process internally. We also have a very clear client process that keeps things organized and projects running smoothly. Although I am the primary leader of Trout Design Co. we both work very well together and we each have our individual roles within the business which helps with any challenges or obstacles we may encounter.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I develop brand identities that are built on a strong foundation of strategy. Strategy is key for me when working with my clients. Upon starting a project we spend a lot of time researching and positioning before we even begin to start our creative process. We look at our client’s brand and their goals from every angle so once we get to the creative portion of our process we have a very clear direction in which to go. This makes the creative portion of our process very easy because we have a clear vision for what we want to achieve based on a concrete strategy.

When creating branding for a client I am confident in it because we did the research and have a clear strategy in place. I would say that this is something I’m most proud of when designing because it gives me the utmost confidence in what we have created for our clients.

I think what sets us apart from others is our ability to look at our client’s goals and create a strong brand identity based on what they want to achieve. The fun visuals are only the icing on the cake and are a clear reflection of the research and strategy that was developed behind the curtain.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is helping my clients to be successful. It makes me happy to use my talents to help others achieve their goals. Whether it’s a small business or a large company I enjoy creating visuals that authentically communicate who they are and what services/products they provide.
