Hi Lex, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My path to the pet care business has been shaped by resilience, adaptability, and a lifelong passion for animals. From a young age, I’ve had a deep connection with animals. I’ve always had several pets; they have been a constant and grounding part of my life. Over the years, many of my animals had high needs, requiring special care and attention. It was often difficult to leave them behind when I had to be away, and I understand firsthand the challenges of finding the right caregiver who can meet those needs.
After my enlistment in the Marine Corps and sudden medical issues cutting my military career shorter than anticipated, I transitioned into civilian life. I then spent five years as an operations and safety manager, excelling in leadership roles. While I performed well professionally, I struggled to find fulfillment in the work.
Determined to create something meaningful, I turned to my lifelong love for animals and started my own pet care business. My experiences with my pets, especially those with high medical needs, gave me a unique perspective and a deep empathy for families in similar situations. I specialized in caring for pets with complex needs, such as administering medications, managing specific routines, and working with service and working dogs. I also made it a priority to tailor my care to each family’s unique needs, understanding how different every situation can be.
Today, my business is one of the most sought-after in the Lowcountry. Combining the discipline and skills I developed in the military with my lifelong connection to animals, I’ve created a career that brings me joy and fulfillment. I’m proud to offer a level of care that truly supports each pet’s individual needs while helping their families navigate the challenges of pet care. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful every day to do what I love.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Building Holy City Semper Fido has presented its share of challenges. Transitioning from a traditional career meant adapting quickly to the demands of running a business, from managing finances to marketing. Early on, there were moments of uncertainty as I navigated these new responsibilities.
Caring for pets with high medical needs or high-energy dogs requires specialized knowledge and attention. Balancing this level of care with the operational demands of the business has been demanding, but it’s a challenge I’ve embraced.
Establishing trust with clients was also a gradual process. Pet owners seek a high standard of care for their pets, and building that rapport takes time and consistent service.
My newest and most current challenge is hiring to keep up with the growing demand. Finding the right individuals who share my passion for animals and can uphold the level of care I provide has proven difficult. The hiring and training process takes time, but it’s crucial to maintain the high standards that have contributed to the success of the business.
Despite these challenges, each step has reinforced my commitment to delivering exceptional care, and the journey has been both rewarding and fulfilling.

Holy City Semper Fido is a pet care business focused on providing high-quality, compassionate care for all pets including special needs. We specialize in in-home overnight care, ensuring that a pet’s routine is not disturbed when they need extra care while their owners are away. However, we offer a variety of services, including in-home boarding, dog walking, and tailored care for pets that require extra attention such as those with medical needs and high-energy dogs, pet taxi, K9 handler for special events or photoshoots, daycare, and even pup field trips!
I’m especially proud of the trust we’ve built with our clients. Many of the pets we care for require specialized knowledge, like administering medications or handling behavioral issues. My team and I go above and beyond to ensure that every pet feels safe, comfortable, and loved, especially those with more complex care needs.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was always competitive, determined, and ready for a challenge. Soccer and basketball were a huge part of my childhood. I loved being out on the field, whether I was chasing after a soccer ball or shooting hoops. Sports taught me teamwork, discipline, and perseverance, and I always pushed myself to be the best I could be.
Like most kids, I had a few different dreams. I wanted to be a professional soccer player, a veterinarian, and even an astronaut. My love for animals was just as strong as my passion for sports. I had dogs, bunnies, and birds growing up, and my grandfather had horses, pigs, and chickens. I always felt a special bond with animals, spending my time rescuing those in need—whether it was a squirrel, raccoon, or injured bird. From a young age, I learned the importance of caring for others, and that love for animals has stuck with me ever since.
As an only child, family meant everything to me. I lost my father at a young age, and my mom raised me on her own. That gave me a deep sense of loyalty and responsibility, and I learned how to appreciate the close bond we shared.
These early experiences shaped who I am today, giving me a strong sense of empathy, a deep love for animals, and a relentless drive to succeed. They’ve influenced everything I do, from my passion for pet care to my determination to always push forward and overcome any challenge.
