Daily Inspiration: Meet Juliano Bollauf

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juliano Bollauf

Hi Juliano, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Since I was a child, I have developed at school instead of studying. I stay at home, I use cooking oil on A4 sheets of paper to make transparent and effective copies of drawings from tattoo magazines and factory montages. At school, I also made drawings with a pen on the skin of two of my friends. I used a pencil to erase the pen ink on the skin and that friction burned the skin and created a scab, a “supposed tattoo”, when I turned 13. I first got in touch with a tattoo artist when I had an older friend who used to use a remote-controlled car engine, a reed needle, a crochet hook, a notebook charger and Indian ink. I tattooed him and he tattooed me. I checked at home with my mother’s name and at the same time she was there excited, she wanted to “kill” me, haha. After that, I developed an interest and love for art. However, I no longer had access to it because at the time I didn’t have access to the internet and because it was a small city, tattoo materials were only purchased online. There were about 3 great tattoo artists in the city. I had in mind that I wouldn’t be able to grow in tattooing. In 2015, I moved back to Curitiba – Paraná. I sold a car that I had and started looking for a course to take, but it was very expensive and taught the basics. In addition, my family and friends said that it wouldn’t work, that I didn’t know how to tattoo, that it wouldn’t work, that I didn’t have the money. I used this as motivation. I met a childhood friend of my mother’s and she had a lot of tattoos. So I asked her where she got her tattoos done. She said that she had a friend from the village where she lived. I asked for his contact information. He was essential for my first steps in tattooing. I started talking to him about giving me a tattoo course. He made me an offer: “Come get tattooed with me and I’ll charge a small fee above the normal price of a tattoo and I’ll teach you.” I got some tattoos with him and started tattooing. At first, I tattooed pigskin, until I started tattooing friends and family for free. Then I started charging the cost of materials. I remember that I would buy tattoo materials like needles, tips, and inks on my own to get the tattoo I had scheduled, sometimes just 1 needle. I would schedule the tattoo and it would arrive 3 days in advance. During those 3 days, I would study the style. I went to an old and well-known studio in my neighborhood and asked the tattoo artist to go to his studio to do a cleaning. and organization of the studio just to see him tattoo, and he wasn’t going to pay me anything, but he didn’t care and despised me, I worked at McDonald’s and after a few months I started to have a few more clients, sometimes I would spend 2 to 3 days without sleeping alternating tattooing with my steady job, only based on energy, in 2018 I decided to come to the United States, this is where my career as a tattoo artist would change, I started tattooing and for being the first Brazilian tattoo artist to arrive permanently in the Charleston region, it was great, because our region had a shortage of Brazilian tattoo artists, since 2018 I have been fighting and struggling to build my name, I even worked in construction and in the first 2 years I didn’t have time off, for 3 months I got to sleep 3 hours a night alternating tattooing with construction work, until in 2022 I started looking for what I had to do to opening a studio in south carolina “which is one of the most difficult, if not the most difficult, places in the country to open a tattoo studio”. In October 2023, I started running after the documentation and it took me 1 year to get the licenses, paying rent, water and electricity without being able to use the space. I thought about giving up many times and almost handed over the key to the shop to the owner. My strong point, motivation and my angels who kept me going were my family, my wife and daughters, especially my wife Sabrina Coelho. Until September 7, 2024, I opened my tattoo shop “the first Latino tattoo studio in South Carolina”. I worked to set up a cozy, comfortable environment that is different from anything you’ve ever seen around here. In addition, I have a great team to provide the best service to everyone, including CEO: Sabrina Coelho, Manager: Victor Coelho, and 2 renowned artists, specialists and dedicated to what they do, in addition to me, who are Adam, Brazilian and Vargas Cuban, here we are open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 7pm and Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm, I hope to have the privilege of seeing you here in our tattoo shop
