Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Grace Thompson
Hi Laura Grace, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up around my grandmother who painted. She allowed so much beautiful creative exploration. I assume that is where it all started. When she passed, art became a way I could remain in contact with her.
As growing up happens, I strayed from the arts for a while but found my way back during Covid.
The isolation brought up some heavy feeling and art once again became my outlet. I changed my major (for the third time) to get my bachelor of fine arts.
I am so proud of taking that scary step. But I knew it was the only way I would feel fulfilled.
Today, I am working with honesty and authenticity within my work, as that feels most important.
I am learning to use my internal landscape to map out where I should go next.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been far from smooth. It is interesting with the arts, there is no clear path so we all just have to forge our own. It makes Artist strong and resilient. Every obstacle is a chance to learn and lean deeper into the practice. And to me, that’s what art is about.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an artist. I am heavily influenced by nature and the similarities between humans and the natural world. I work mostly with graphite but am shifting into acrylic and oil paint. At this point in my journey I’m finding out what feels good for me without the pressure to appeal to others. I know if I were to be all alone I would still create, and that’s the work I want to put out.
I don’t have a specific style and I think this is what sets me apart from others. I’m not done learning and testing out new things. I have no idea where I will end up with all of this but I know I wouldn’t have it any other way.
What does success mean to you?
I define success by love. I think all things can be overcome through love. If love is present, there is success.
