Today we’d like to introduce you to Phoebe Teeters
Hi Phoebe , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Phoebe Teeters (she/her) is a
multidisciplinary artist who specializes in mixed media art, making skateboards, screen printing, curator assistance, and mosaics. Her background is in photography, and fashion.
Her love of skateboarding began when she was ten years old in Florida. She has been making skateboards for the last eight and half years. Making skateboards is by far her favorite medium. She has worked with Blacksheep Skateshop and Plus Skateshop doing art events and shop decks. As well as worked with different skateparks on contests and community events.
She has taught at the Orlando Museum of Art, McColl Center, and most recently at The Light Factory. Her work has been displayed at Duke University, Gaston College, Goodyear Arts, Obra Collective, Boom Festival, Sulfur Studios, local galleries and businesses in the Southeast, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Nashville.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In 2022, I had the biggest health scare of my life. I had to be rushed to the ER and found out I had two masses that had gotten so large they were pushing on other organs. Thankfully, it wasn’t cancer. The surgery I had was only supposed to take two hours but, took five. Three days later I ended up having an aneurysm. It’s a miracle I’m here after all of that. My recovery was the most humbling experience of my life.
As soon as I got released from the hospital after being there for over a month I was in my first art show since everything had happened. It was a show I had been in for two previous years and I wanted to still take part even though I was still weak and just starting to heal. Everything that happened was honestly just hitting me and I could actually process it finally. After that show I did a solo exhibit and was doing physical therapy for ten months. Some how I was able to take everything that happened and channel it into my artwork which is what a lot of artists do. I’m thankful every day for everything and most of all for skateboarding and art.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a multidisciplinary artist. Would say, I’m best known for making skateboards. For the last eight and half years I’ve made recycled skateboard art, custom boards, mixed media skateboard art for shows and businesses and commissions.
There’s a lot I’m honestly proud of. Think one of my favorite things about what I do is receiving pictures from folks that have purchased my work. My artwork has been rideable, it is in homes, businesses, skateparks, has been given as gifts, and actual collected by some. That is a top tier feeling.
Any big plans?
Plans going forward are to continue to evolve as an artist and work with some skate companies in the future. To keep working on getting my artwork out to new audiences and always working with the skate and art communities.
