Rising Stars: Meet Abigail Ross of Columbia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Ross

Hi Abigail, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
True story: I started this business when I was 15 years old!

Hi, I’m Abigail Ross—a graphic designer and photographer based in South Carolina. My journey began when I got my first camera for Christmas at 15, and that gift sparked a passion in me. Fresh out of middle school, I decided to turn that passion into a business. Over the years, I’ve evolved as an artist, graduating from the University of South Carolina with a degree in Fine Arts. Today, I specialize in Portrait and Lifestyle photography, helping high school and college graduates, families, and brands capture their unique personalities and special memories. Being behind the lens and making people feel beautiful is what drives me every day.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road! I completely understand the struggle with perfectionism. As a creative, you want everything to be just right, but that mindset can sometimes hold you back from moving forward or finishing a project. I’ve had to learn to embrace the idea that done is better than perfect, which was a big shift for me.

Keeping up with new technology and the constantly changing information on how to run a business has also been challenging. There’s always something new to learn—whether it’s a new editing software, social media algorithm, or business management tool. In the beginning, it felt overwhelming, but I’ve realized that you don’t have to master everything all at once. I focus on one area at a time, learning as I go. I’ve also found that surrounding myself with supportive people—whether it’s mentors, fellow creatives, or online communities—has been essential. They’ve helped me navigate these challenges and reminded me that it’s okay not to have all the answers right away.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I consider myself a jack of all trades when it comes to art. While photography is my main focus, my passion for creativity extends to graphic design, painting, product design, and even social media management. I specialize in senior photography for both college and high school seniors. I believe senior sessions are more than just photos—they’re memories that last for generations. That’s why I created the Ross Photography Company Senior Experience. It’s all about delivering authentic, high-quality photos that capture who you are in under two hours.

What sets me apart is how personal and stress-free I make the process. Each session comes with a “what to wear” guide to help seniors choose the perfect outfits, and I offer beautifully curated products that allow them to display and cherish their photos for years to come. From start to finish, I’m there every step of the way to ensure the entire experience is easy, creative, and memorable.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as a combination of two things: creating work that I’m genuinely proud of and seeing the excitement and joy from my clients when they receive their photos. There’s nothing more fulfilling than capturing authentic moments that reflect someone’s true personality and knowing that those images will be cherished for years. When my clients are thrilled with the experience and the final product, that’s when I know I’ve done my job well. Success, for me, is about making meaningful connections through my art and creating memories that last a lifetime.
