Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarae Smith
Hi Sarae, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
So, I didn’t exactly grow up dreaming of being a paralegal. But even back then, I knew I just wanted to help people, it lit me up inside (and still does).
My early career was in the non-profit sector volunteering and working in child abuse prevention/awareness projects and addiction recovery facilities. The connections I made working in the non-profit world then led me to working in the law enforcement industry as a 911 dispatcher. Working in each of these fields gave me exposure to legal procedures and let me tell you, I was hooked! I dove headfirst into paralegal training and the more I learned, the more I realized the full potential of a career in this industry.
I quickly realized I could be the CEO of my own life AND of my career. So, I took a leap of faith and started my business, CEO Paralegal, LLC in November of last year. It’s been a wild ride, but I’m loving every minute of it and wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Disclaimer: As a paralegal, I only work with attorneys. CEO Paralegal LLC is not a law firm and does not give legal advice.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
“Begin on the path and the path will appear!” Saying yes to myself was the hardest part, once I fully committed and began on my path everything after seemed easier in comparison. No one who owns their own business is going to tell you it’s “easy”, but it is SO worth it. I have an incredibly supportive circle of friends and family who keep me motivated.
When I first began, podcasters, “legal experts”, and other naysayers told me I would need 5-10 more years of experience to be able to make it as a freelance paralegal. But I didn’t accept that message for myself. I had clients within the first month of opening my business and I’m still going strong.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m drawn to the attorneys who have an entrepreneurial spirit – the nomads, the adventurers, the woo-woo, and the thoughtful deep thinkers. I’ve found that many of these kindred spirits are nestled within Intellectual Property- Trademarks, Contracts, Business Startup Practices. This area of law is interesting to work in as an entrepreneur myself. It’s a privilege to collaborate with people who are on the same wavelength.
In addition to my own freelance paralegal work, CEO Paralegal LLC also facilitates connections between other paralegals and law firms. This match making process goes beyond merely assessing the skills and qualifications of the paralegal; it takes a personalized approach with compatibility and synergy in mind. Intentionality is key for both the law firm and the paralegal, ensuring that each connection is built on shared values and aspirations. This holistic approach helps create a thriving professional relationship for everyone involved.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Outside of my paralegal work, I enjoy sewing. I believe that sewing is a fading art, but a beautiful one. Nowadays fast fashion dominates, making it easy to purchase inexpensive, mass-produced items at low quality.
I’m excited to announce that I’m working on a creative sewing project where I will offer unique, handmade pieces that capture a free-spirited nature and boho vibe.
Stay tuned for updates!
