Life & Work with Alicia Silva Flores of Charleston, SC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Silva Flores

Hi Alicia , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m originally from Chicago, IL and have a strong connection to my Mexican heritage, with a background in the arts and cultural tourism. When I moved to Charleston, SC, in 2018, I felt inspired to start a flower farm that would focus on the importance of nurturing both nature and our community. Although I had no experience growing anything from seed, I dedicated myself to learning about the local climate and the specific needs of my community.

In the heart of Charleston, I founded Jardín Bonita, where we grow small-batch, pesticide-free blooms while collaborating with local growers and artists. Our offerings include seasonal flower subscriptions, custom floral designs for private and corporate events, and hands-on workshops. Our goal is to preserve the art of growing together.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey of being a flower farmer and floral designer is filled with trial and error, which is part of its charm. Even when challenges arise, nature has a reassuring way of showing us that everything will eventually be alright. Over the past few years, I’ve faced significant grief including the death of my mother last year. Through it all, flowers have taught me that life doesn’t always go as planned, but no matter the difficulties, we can always continue to grow and thrive.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in cultivating unique cut flowers from seed, offering varieties that aren’t available at grocery stores or through distributors. Growing special varieties truly enhances my design perspective. There’s nothing quite like locally grown flowers; they tend to be more vibrant and have a longer vase life. About 80% of cut flowers are imported, and I want to raise awareness that locally-grown flowers offer more benefits than most people realize. My Mexican heritage and the traditions handed down to me play a significant role in my work, influencing both the types of flowers I grow and the community events I organize.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’m passionate about collaborations; they’re at the heart of everything I do. I’m currently booking clients for 2025 for both private and corporate events. My spring subscriptions will be launching soon—perfect for the holidays! A sustainable gift? Yes, please!
