Meet Shawn Mohammed of Irmo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Mohammed

Hi Shawn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Shawn Mohammed’s story began 24 years ago, when he took on the role of wedding planner and coordinator for his brother’s wedding. On top of the challenge itself, he had to work remotely in New York City (where he was living at the time), while his brother was living in Trinidad.

Despite the thousands of miles separating him from his brother and soon-to-be sister-in-law, he was able to successfully coordinate and plan every last detail of their big day. Shawn left a lasting impression on not only the bride and groom, but also on the hundreds of guests who attended the wedding.

Word spread quickly about the phenomenal event, leading to rave reviews from not only friends and family, but also the local Trinidadian talk show “Community Dateline.” Shawn’s career as a wedding planner and event coordinator was officially born.

Shawn has a unique background that has shaped him into the wedding planner he is today. Born and raised on the island nation of Trinidad, he came to the United States to continue his education. While living in New York City, he worked for major luxury retailers including Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale’s and Ralph Lauren. During his time at Bergdorf Goodman, Shawn’s exceptional customer service led to an impressive celebrity clientele. Shawn had the opportunity to service Donna Summer, Patti LaBelle, Carolina Herrera, André Leon Talley and the Princess of Thailand. In addition to his time at Bergdorf Goodman, he worked for Ralph Lauren’s Black Label and Purple Label. He often frequented the runway shows for the fashion house and had the honor to speak with Mr. Ralph Lauren.

Now residing in South Carolina, he has taken his prior luxury fashion retail experience and tailored it toward his career as a wedding planner. Shawn currently operates his own wedding planning business, Platinum Label Weddings, in Columbia, South Carolina. He attributes much of his success to his attention to detail, allowing him to plan one-of-a-kind weddings. Shawn ensures that the client always comes first, so listening is key for planning their special day. He believes every client deserves the height of customer service and professionalism. Shawn continually creates a planning experience that caters to every aspect of the wedding process, giving the bride a day she and her guests will always remember. Shawn has also return to his love for the fashion industry and is currently the Field Execuitive for one of the worlds largest cosmetics company.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My experience when I moved to Columbia,SC and opened my wedding planning business as an outsider was very challenging. One of the struggles I encontered was booking a Cauasian southern bride. Additionally, I found it difficult to be accepted into one or the networking groups in Columbia. These challenges were disheartining but I persevered and won consecutive Couple Choice Awards from Wedding Wire an international platform and a few awards at the Columbia Bridal Expo. Thease achievements demonstrate my dedication to my work and my ability to overcome challenges in a new environment.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a wedding planner, I specialize in creating one-of-a-kind events tailored to any budget. I draw inspiration from my clients, listening to their vision and bringing it to life. With my exceptional negotiating and communication skills, I work to ensure my clients get the best possible outcome. When booking vendors, I carefully select those who are not only masters of thir craft, but also a great fit for the client. My goal is to create a truly unique and memorable experience for every couple.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
The city has a rich history and offers a lot of value, making it an attractive location for clients from other states to bring their business. However, the market in the wedding industry is dominated by one indvidual, which limits competion. Columbia lacks luxury accommodations. The old boys club needs to be addressed to create more competion and opportunities for growth. The city could benefit from more luxury accommodation options. These are areas to consider for business development and investment in Columbia,SC.
