Life & Work with Kristin Earp and Jessie Lancaster of Shallotte NC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Earp and Jessie Lancaster.

Hi Kristin and Jessie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
We started in hair school together in 2015. We both decided to work at the same salon out of hair school in 2016 in Holden beach NC. About 2 years in we decided we were ready to start our own business. So in 2018 we opened the original Honeycomb. It started with 600 sq ft. We hired 1 stylist. So there were then 3 of us. We would actually mix color and have lunch in a space the size of a closet. About a year into business we realized we needed more space to accommodate staffing and our growing clientele. We expanded to 1200 sq ft and added 9 employees. We now had 12 staff members. Business was doing well. In 2020 when the pandemic hit, we were trying to make money online to help pay our bills while we were closed. We started selling jewelry and that went really well. When the salon was finally ready to open back up, we opened a boutique called Milk and Honey. The boutique was right beside the salon. In 2022 we decided we really needed more space. We found a 3000 sq ft unit on Main st. In shallotte. In January 2023 we moved in and combined Honeycomb and Milk and Honey. We now have 22 employees and a vast clientele. We plan to continue expanding. Our planned expansion has an expected finish date of January 2025.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a smoothe road. We’ve had many obstacles on the way. Just the construction of adding on and moving our space in such a short amount of time. We’ve constantly been renovating. There’s always room for improvement so we’re constantly trying to keep up. We’ve also tripled our staff. So learning how to handle so many employees has been a learning curve. We work pretty well together so it has actually went pretty smoothly.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We are a Salon that offers many different services. We’re expanding more into our medical esthetics but as of now we offer hair, waxing, Botox, Hydrafacial, lashes, makeup, and bridal services. With the boutique being inside of Honeycomb we also offer the latest trends when it comes to fashion. We are known for our talented staff and up to date esthetic. We are most proud of our staff and the friendship we’ve built with them. It really feels like a family. What sets us apart from others is the variety of services we offer and the skilled staff.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Yes. It taught us to continue to work hard and push through because all of our hard work could be gone in a blink. It’s taught us to appreciate everyday and not to take our job for granted. We were shut down for 3 months with no income and bill to still be paid. We were respourceful with ideas on how to continue to make income. It was small but it was something.
