Today we’d like to introduce you to Pairlon Dunagan
Hi Pairlon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Photography has always been in my life. Growing up in North Georgia, I spent countless hours alongside my mom, a seasoned photographer with over 20 years of experience. From an early age, I tagged along to her sessions, often playing the role of her assistant. Yet, despite this early exposure, I was determined to carve my own path. When people asked if I would follow in her footsteps and take over the family business, my answer was always a resounding “no.”
Driven by a desire for independence, I left home and pursued a business degree, 5 hours away, at the College of Coastal Georgia. Even then, I wasn’t sure how I’d use that degree; I just knew I needed to find my own way. However, life has a funny way of leading us back to where we belong. On a whim, I asked my mom for one of her old cameras, intending to use it for fun, capturing moments with friends and whatever caught my eye.
From the moment I picked up that camera, I was hooked. What started as something fun and silly, quickly turned into a passion. I began taking graduation photos for friends, and word spread fast. While my mom specializes in newborn and family photography, I was drawn to the excitement of wedding photography, thanks to a family friend who excelled in that field.
Serendipity struck when a local photographer from St. Simons Island reached out, inviting me to be her second shooter at weddings. We clicked instantly, and from that point on, my weekends were filled with wedding shoots. It didn’t take long for me to realize that this was what I was meant to do.
In July 2023, I made an Instagram account and started taking my photography more seriously. By March 2024, I had gone full-time, and now my calendar for 2025 is already filled with wedding bookings. I feel incredibly fortunate and grateful for this journey, and I’m excited to see where this newfound success will take me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey hasn’t always been smooth, but it’s those challenges that have shaped me into the photographer I am today. Starting out, I faced the typical struggles of any new business – finding clients, building a portfolio, and establishing my own style. Transitioning from assisting my mom to creating my own identity in the photography world was a challenge in itself. I wanted to honor the influence she had on me while also making a name for myself. There were moments when I doubted myself, wondering if I had made the right choice, and I definitely dealt with imposter syndrome, especially with the presence of social media.
Another challenge was learning the business side of photography. While my business degree provided a foundation, applying that knowledge to a creative field like photography was a whole different ball game. I had to learn how to market myself, manage finances, and deal with the logistical aspects of running a photography business, all while trying to maintain my passion for the art itself.
Despite the obstacles, each struggle taught me valuable lessons and pushed me to grow. I’ve learned that persistence is key, and the support of a community – whether it’s my family, mentors, or fellow photographers – has been instrumental in overcoming these challenges. The road has had its bumps, but every step has brought me closer to where I want to be.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work as a photographer is a reflection of my passion for capturing genuine moments and the beauty of human connection. I specialize primarily in wedding photography, where I strive to document the love, joy, and intimate emotions of couples on one of the most important days of their lives. In addition to weddings, I also enjoy capturing lifestyle portraits and family moments for my clients to cherish for a lifetime.
What sets my work apart is my commitment to authenticity and emotion. I focus on creating images that feel real and timeless. Whether it’s the laughter shared between family and friends, a tender glance between newlyweds, or the quiet, reflective moments that often go unnoticed. I aim to make my subjects feel comfortable and themselves in front of the camera, which allows me to capture those candid, unscripted moments that truly tell their story.
I’m most proud of the way my photography resonates with my clients. The greatest compliment I’ve received is when my clients tell me that looking at their photos brings them right back to the emotions they felt on their wedding day or that I captured the personality of their family perfectly. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that my work can evoke such powerful feelings and serve as a lasting memory for them.
What truly sets me apart, though, is the blend of creativity, friendship and business acumen that I bring to my work. With a background in business and a lifelong exposure to the world of photography, I’ve been able to turn my passion into a thriving career quickly. If my client doesn’t leave a shoot or a wedding day wanting to be lifelong friends I failed. I’m constantly learning and evolving, whether it’s refining my technique, experimenting with new styles, or expanding my portfolio. This drive to grow, paired with my deep love for storytelling through photography, is what fuels my success and sets me on a path to continue creating meaningful, impactful work.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My best advice is to just keep shooting! Truly learn your camera. You can push a few buttons here and there, but if you don’t actually understand what each button does you are going to struggle with your consistency.
