Check Out Megan Goodman’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Goodman

Megan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am an Army Veteran , engaged to my best friend, and a mom of 2 boys 14&2 (I know what a gap). Very millennial of me. I am from Buffalo, NY. Go Bills! I love fashion, to me clothes are just another artistic medium. I love to read, prior to being a stylist I was a book influencer! I am very much into astrology because I wholeheartedly believe it’s a great tool for business and self development.

I moved to Greenville in 2017 for work and when I started to feel stagnant in corporate America; I decided to bet on myself and enroll myself in cosmetology school in 2021. The beauty industry was always where I wanted to be in my heart; it just took a while for me to have the courage to pursue it.

Once I graduated cosmetology school, I went and shadowed several people that had been in the industry because I wanted to see what it’s like behind the chair. That really helped me understand who I wanted to be as a cosmetologist. I also believe in collaboration over competition and I think networking within your own industry is imperative.

When I started to look for my home salon, I was guided to Salon Unity by another local stylist. I always planned on being a multicultural hairstylist because I want everyone to feel comfortable and look amazing when sitting in my chair. Salon Unity’s mission statement fit everything I was looking for.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely was not a smooth road. Most of my bumps in the road were mental (imposter syndrome, not feeling like I’m enough, being scared of failure, analysis paralysis, etc). The idea of starting over and having to depend solely on yourself in regards to the outcome is scary.

I felt out of my element and going to school full time for a year without bringing in any income was mental daunting. Balancing motherhood and partnership while pursuing a new career was difficult as I typically have tunnel vision when pursuing a goal.

While in cosmetology school, my father passed away and it was so hard to keep pushing through when I lost my someone who was my foundation for so long.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a multicultural hairstylist and makeup artist at Salon Unity in downtown Greenville (near the peace center). My specialties are curly/coily hair, custom color, and makeup.

I would say I’m most known for my work with coily/curly hair.

I am proud that with me being behind the chair less than a year, I’ve serviced over 150 clients and retained most of them in some capacity. New clients are great but I love building rapport with clients that come back to me as a service provider.

I believe what sets me apart is my personality, my gentle hands, my calming aura and my intentionality of being multicultural stylist. I want any and everyone to feel comfortable sitting in my chair and know they will leave feeling confident and relaxed.
