Conversations with Jesse Camacho

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Camacho

Hi Jesse, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in Los Angeles, California, and grew up in Santa Monica until I was 9.

Then, my family decided to move to Arkansas, and during the drive, I picked up one of my dad’s cameras and started to document everything from the drive. With a family of six, a 23-hour car ride would turn into a 2-and-a-half-day car ride. This sparked a passion for photography that has stayed with me ever since.

My interest in photography stems from my paternal grandfather, who, from what I’ve heard, was a photographer living in Mexico his whole life. He passed away in 2001 before I could meet him. Although I dabbled in Theater and Photography during high school and college, I eventually changed my major to Journalism. I’ve always been drawn to art and fashion, and in 2023, I decided to start my fashion magazine, Love is Love Magazine.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a great experience so far. When I started the magazine, I wanted to emphasize that there’s no right or wrong way to create art. I sought guidance and support from many industry acquaintances, including Karla Martinez de Salas, the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Mexico, Rebecca Voight from Leaf Magazine, and Ann Shoket, former Editor-in-Chief of Seventeen Magazine. I’ve learned that keeping an open mind is essential for learning and thriving.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve been passionate about photography since I was 9 years old, and that passion has stayed with me over the past 20 years. I’ve also ventured into fashion styling and creative direction, and recently, I launched Love is Love, a bi-annual print publication that focuses on fashion, art, and culture. Our second print issue, featuring the Fall and Winter 2024 seasons, was released in July.

When I began this project, I aimed to make it distinct by dedicating it to inclusivity and amplifying minority voices 24/7, rather than just during specific months or events. This approach has allowed us to collaborate with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, each providing a fresh perspective on creativity and societal issues.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Authenticity and open-mindedness. Being open-minded allows me to consider different perspectives and ideas, which can lead to innovative solutions and better collaboration. On the other hand, authenticity helps me stay true to myself, build genuine relationships, and earn the trust of others.
