Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Murphy
Hi Katie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Katie and I went to college in Ohio to be an elementary school teacher and did that for 8 years in North Carolina. During Covid, my fiancé and I decided to convert a van and live in it full-time while exploring all of the lower 48 states for a year. We then spent the following year traveling internationally hitting all of the continents except for Antartica. While we were traveling, I discovered a passion for photography and capturing the beautiful places that we explored. I started taking online classes and honing my skills as a travel and nature photographer. When we decided to move back to Wilmington, North Carolina I decided to shift my photography and focus on portraits and lifestyle photography. I started my own photography business called “Shegoes Photography & Designs” and the name is because I love to travel.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There has definitely been some struggles along the way. One struggle is building a client base when there are so many talented photographers in the area. Another struggle I face is lacking the formal training that some photographers have but I am enrolled at Cape Fear Community college for the fall to take a photography class to continue growing as a photographer.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love taking family and couple photos to freeze a happy moment in time that can be cherished forever. I love meeting and working with new people, seeing them come to life in front of the camera and capturing candid moments that truly showcase their personality! I have done some family photos for clients that have printed the pictures and hung them in their house. I love that I can give them something they appreciate and showcase for others. I am very outgoing and strive to do my best to make the experience low stress because being infront of a camera can be intimidating and I want all of my clients to feel relaxed and enjoy their experience.
What makes you happy?
I find happiness in the little things in life. I have lived an incredible life and have had so many life altering experiences with travel that I know most people do not get the opportunity to have. However, while traveling there were many health concerns that arose for me which was very scary and made me realize that there is joy and I can find happiness in everyday life, even just making a salad for my fiancé brings me joy, because I realize that I am lucky to even be here.
