Today we’d like to introduce you to SunRhé Colón
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been singing since childhood and always sought new ways to express myself. Growing up, one of my aunts allowed me to use her basement as a creative space and provided me with a sewing machine, canvases to paint, and a toy microphone and stand. I gravitated toward theatre, choir, chorus and eventually ventured into talent shows, open mics, and YouTube covers. I had a cover of JoJo’s version of “Marvin’s Room” go viral, then started to look at my abilities in a different light. Once I was ready to take myself seriously as a singer and songwriter, SoundCloud became a great outlet to share original music. The feedback on those songs and my performance ability was always really affirming, so now I fully embrace my artist persona.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think recently, my biggest challenge has been acknowledging my value. I’m still building the confidence to unapologetically name my asking price, or grasp the importance of my role as an artist. Crossing the threshold from your craft being a vice, to becoming a way of life, comes with a lot of challenges: financially, resourcefully… the list goes on. I do believe in the power of manifestation and know that most obstacles can be overcome with a confident mindset.
I am my own biggest critic. My own worst enemy. The greatest obstacle I want to overcome is the doubtful state of mind that tries to convince me I am anything less than what my art continuously proves me to be.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m primarily known for being a singer/songwriter, but I have a lot of other creative outlets as well. For example, I do the creative direction for all of my photoshoots and videos. Wardrobe, hair and makeup, concepts, lighting, that’s all me. Occasionally I’ll pick up some paint or colored pencils and create visual art as well. I think most creatives are multitalented because that mindset is just to bring as much imagination to life as possible. I like to challenge myself and present the unexpected to my audience, Of course, I will present myself as a music artist first because that’s what I am most passionate about, but creativity is limitless.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
The thing that I feel surprises people most is when they find out I’m a mother. I try not to post too much about my son, just because I want him to be able to consent to being seen in a certain light, but I also have to acknowledge motherhood as an essential factor of my life and lifestyle. I like to treat my roles of Mother and Artist as separate but equal, which is actually what inspired me to create a non-profit organization called Mostly Mom.Me. Being an artist is innate, but it also comes with a responsibility to connect people and activate their imaginations. I see a lot of similarities between being a parent and being a creative, so my non-profit is meant to be a supportive network for those who feel the same.
