Rising Stars: Meet Marcus Washington of Columbia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Washington

Hi Marcus, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started producing music as a senior in high school. While I was in college at Coastal Carolina University I also started DJing in clubs and at different Greek life functions. When I got out of college I started taking my craft more seriously and I was signed to a record label out of California. In 2018 I released a remix of the song “Sandstorm” that has been played at numerous University of South Carolina athletic events and has gathered over 100k streams on all platforms. After that I gathered more buzz and played shows in Columbia, Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and Charlotte. I released songs on 8 different record labels and I have had my music played at huge festivals such as EDC Las Vegas, EDC Orlando, Lost Lands and Nocturnal Wonderland. I went In recent years I took a little time off from music but now I am back and better than ever and ready to take the scene by storm once again.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. I was released from my record label and I lost all passion for music. It took a lot of time for me to remember who I was and it took finding a good circle of friends to really be a support system. I have struggled with depression since my sophomore year of highschool and have been diagnosed with Clinical Depression since my junior year and all of this just piled on to that.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a music producer. I specialize in the genre of Trap but I can make really anything. I’m known for having a really hard hitting sub bass we call that an 808 in our field. I am most proud of just taking the step and putting my self out there. Most artists will probably agree with me here but it takes a lot to put your art out into the world. It feels like putting a piece of inner self into the world.

What does success mean to you?
I define success as being happy with your work. When you lay your head down at the end of the day and your mind is racing, if you are happy with your product or with the direction you are headed, that day has been a success.
