Today we’d like to introduce you to Savanna James
Hi Savanna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Cowpens, South Carolina, a very small town rich in history and community spirit. Growing up in Cowpens, my parents instilled in me the values of hard work, perseverance, and the importance of community.
Storytelling and creativity were my passions. I spent countless hours reading and often took first place in literary competitions at the local library and school. One of the highlights of my journey was working with Tim Burton on his film “Big Fish,” along with collaborating with other internationally renowned directors and companies in the film and entertainment industry. This unwavering love for storytelling has been a driving force throughout my life.
In 2015, I lost my older brother, Chad, a profound loss that brought a stark realization: the world is full of unlimited opportunities, but our time is limited. This taught me that if you truly want something, you must act on it now.
After earning my master’s degree in mass communications from the University of South Carolina (Go Cocks!), I began my career in sports journalism as a reporter and anchor.
My career took a significant turn when I moved to Charleston, SC to explore new opportunities. This move opened doors to working more “behind the scenes” on strategy. I honed my public relations, marketing, branding, and communications skills, propelling my career in unexpected directions, including teaching Public Speaking at colleges nationwide.
Soon after my move, however, I faced a daunting reality: at 23, I had to undergo a double mastectomy related to breast cancer. After enduring a dozen successful surgeries, I resolved to return to my roots in Spartanburg to make a meaningful impact where it mattered most. I wanted to inspire young girls with big dreams, and even bigger determinations, to succeed. In a community often seen as the underdog, I aimed to show that with the right drive, skills, and connections, we could rise to success.
Today, I am proud to serve as the Chief Marketing and Brand Strategy Manager at Spartanburg Community College under the visionary and inspiring leadership of Dr. Stacey Obi, VP of Strategic Innovation, and Dr. Michael Mikota, President. My journey from a small-town girl with a love for storytelling to a dedicated professional committed to her community has been marked by both challenges and triumphs.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Throughout my journey, I’ve encountered significant challenges that have profoundly shaped my path. The loss of my older brother in 2015 forced me to confront life’s fragility and taught me the importance of seizing every opportunity. A few years later, undergoing a double mastectomy at the age of 23 tested my resilience in ways I never imagined, requiring me to navigate multiple surgeries and endure the emotional and physical toll of treatment.
Transitioning from a career in sports journalism to strategic roles in public relations and marketing presented its own set of hurdles. Moving from the forefront of reporting to working “behind the scenes” demanded adapting to new responsibilities and mastering intricate business strategy and communication aspects.
In just this past year, I have bid farewell to my father (Lynn James) and grandmother (Granny Merle – a heck of a Braves fan), who were lifelong advocates and pillars of support, reiterating the stark realization I had when my brother passed: the world is full of unlimited opportunities, but our time is limited.
Navigating these personal and professional challenges taught me valuable lessons in perseverance, adaptability, and the power of community. Each obstacle reinforced my determination to make a meaningful impact in my community and beyond, fueling my passion for storytelling and advocacy.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a Marketing Executive, Public Speaker, and Breast Cancer Advocate, my work revolves around leveraging strategic marketing and communication tactics to drive organizational growth and awareness. I specialize in crafting compelling narratives that resonate with diverse audiences, particularly in the realms of higher education and community engagement.
I am known for my ability to blend creativity with strategic thinking, whether in developing impactful marketing campaigns, delivering inspiring speeches on resilience and advocacy, or championing breast cancer research and awareness initiatives. I’m most proud of being able to empower individuals through storytelling and education, especially within the breast cancer community, where I strive to foster hope and support.
At Spartanburg Community College (SCC), we’re forging a path where higher education is accessible to all, breaking barriers regardless of background. This commitment sets us apart as we are at the forefront of making history in the higher education realm. We’re dedicated solely to our students’ success, empowering them to transform their lives and forge their own paths. (And, personally, it’s pretty awesome to be a part of the team making history in the area that I grew up in.)
What sets me apart is my dual perspective as both a seasoned marketer/communications professional and a passionate advocate. This unique combination allows me to approach challenges with empathy, creativity, and a deep understanding of both business strategy and human connection. I am driven by a commitment to making a positive difference, fueled by personal experiences and a dedication to advancing causes that matter deeply to me and my community.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Although this life can sometimes be unfair and cruel, how you respond to it is up to you. I hope you choose to be a force for good. I hope you choose to have hope.
