Meet Theresa Cunningham of Horrell Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Cunningham

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m Theresa, a mixed media artist based in Horrell Hill, South Carolina. The youngest of four siblings. Born in Columbia South Carolina. I had to have open heart surgery at the age of 4. We moved to Miami where I had to have my surgery. Living along the east coast of Florida for a few years before moving back to South Carolina after the death of my father.
Having a difficult childhood, I also had learning disabilities as a child. I discovered art was my solace. I never was without pencil and paper. I never had any doubt that it was the one thing I wanted to do in life. I kept at it and today love what I do.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In 2023 I lost my best friend my husband Ron from a traumatic brain injury sustained from skateboard accident at Owen’s Skate park. I went through a really rough deep depression of disheartening pain and anger trying to understand why.
Through my grief I have taken solace in my work.
Within the past year I discovered a new passion for intuitive abstracts with mixed media. I’ve been working on taking as many online courses that I can find for undiscovered techniques and new mediums.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I first started out as an illustrator for a local school district in 1997 and worked there for two years.. From there I worked online as a graphic designer.
Currently I specialize in coastal and abstract mixed media. I do not focus solely on one particular subject. I’m always working on gathering inspiration to make each series different.
My work is a reflection of the Low Country and Coastal areas of South Carolina. I paint my love for the landscape and wildlife. With a focus on texture & color, I paint to not only reflect my own connection to this special place but also inspire others to slow down, observe, and cherish the beauty that surrounds us.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love that our local communities and businesses have started to embrace and highlight the vast amount of diverse creatives that we have here in South Carolina.

As far as dislikes, I’d have to go with the mosquitos that come with the summer heat and humidity.

P.s. To my Sister Sherri & Brother in law Mike, Thank you for all you’ve done for me this past year.
I love you both.
