Hi Kelli, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In October 2023, my family and I made the big move from San Diego, California to Summerville, South Carolina. The transition was exciting but also a bit daunting. While exploring our new surroundings, I noticed that many great Instagram accounts were focused on moms in Charleston. However, they often felt too far away for us, especially given my son Weston’s midday nap schedule.
Determined to build a community closer to home, I decided to create an Instagram account dedicated to moms in Summerville. My goal was to connect with other local moms, share our experiences, and uncover the hidden gems of our town. This journey has been incredibly rewarding, allowing me to make wonderful friends and build a supportive network for moms in our area. Through this account, we’ve created a space where we can share tips, organize meet-ups, and celebrate the joys and challenges of motherhood together.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Yes, it has been a surprisingly smooth road! I was blown away by how many moms were in the same position—new to the area and eager to make friends. Our meetups quickly grew from just 8 moms to upwards of 40 families attending our sponsored playdates. The growth of Nexton Mom has been incredible, and showcasing local small businesses through these sponsored events has been an unexpected but delightful bonus.
I often worry that no one will show up to our playdates, but I’m consistently amazed by the community’s enthusiastic response. It proves that everyone is looking for friendship and connection.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I plan playdates for moms and toddlers in Summerville, creating opportunities for families to connect and build lasting friendships. As a first-time mom, I understand how isolating it can feel, especially in a new area. I remember just wishing I had a friend with a child my age to connect with, and that desire inspired me to start this initiative.
What sets me apart is my focus on fostering genuine connections among moms and their children. I aim to be a valuable resource for moms, helping them find those connections and discover fun, engaging activities around town. I’m most proud of the supportive community we’ve built together—seeing friendships form and watching kids play and grow together is incredibly rewarding. My dedication to curating meaningful, enjoyable experiences for both moms and toddlers is at the heart of everything I do.
What makes you happy?
I’m a connector at heart. Bringing people together fills me with so much joy. Community is incredibly important, and I know that many moms want to make friends but often don’t know where to start. I’m happy Nexton Mom can be that starting point, creating a space where moms can come together, form friendships, and support each other. Seeing the friendships form AND knowing that I’ve helped create a supportive network makes me truly happy.
