Hidden Gems: Meet Amy Bishop of Yoga Life with Amy, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Bishop

Hi Amy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was informed of a medical issue and told to reduce my stress. My husband and I decided it was best if I left the corporate interior design world. I found yoga as I was looking for a form of movement my doctor’s allowed. The benefits I received from yoga were many and I decided that I wanted to teach and give that gift to others. Therefore, I went through training and graduated in May of 2020. I enjoy bringing the gift of movement/ mobility, flexibility and balance to others and hearing how my students are enjoying their life!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, but my journey has taught me so much about myself. I discovered yoga during a health hardship, which eventually led me to leave my corporate interior design career. After leaving the corporate world, I felt lost and unsure of my next steps. Initially, I started practicing yoga at home through videos before venturing out to classes at the YMCA and studios. Once I realized how much yoga benefited me physically, emotionally, and mentally, I felt compelled to share it with others. I found a teacher training program close to home and signed up. I loved my training and was eager to absorb everything—I was like a sponge! However, I completed my 200-hour training just as the pandemic began, making it impossible to find work or build a following. Unsure of how to start teaching, I decided to continue my education. I completed my 300-hour training in 2021 and moved to the Charleston area in May of that year. I began working at a local yoga studio that offered classes at a private community off-site. When the studio decided to discontinue the off-site classes, I took them over in January 2022. I am still teaching in that private community. I’ve conducted workshops with high school teenagers, given presentations on various subjects, and led mini yoga retreats, along with classes and private sessions. Entrepreneurship has tested my resilience, showing me that I am strong, brave, confident, and capable of tackling challenges. Starting a business is never easy, but it truly tests how much you want it. I love what I do and the impact it has on my students. Seeing the benefits that yoga and my services bring to others makes any difficulty worthwhile.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
What truly sets me apart is my commitment to personalization and accessibility in wellness, making it achievable for everyone, no matter their starting point. I take pride in helping others discover their path to wellness, just as I found my own through yoga during my personal health journey. I’m passionate about assisting others in aging gracefully through movement and energy work. My offerings include mobile private one-on-one and small group sessions where I can come directly to your home, workplace, or wherever you might be. I teach techniques for self-massage using Tune Up® Fitness balls to aid in releasing fascia and enhance mobility. Additionally, I provide reiki attunements, meditation sessions, Yoga Nidra, Restorative Yoga, and various workshops, and am available for public speaking engagements to share the benefits of these practices. My newest venture is hosting yoga retreats.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
There have been so many different people who have supported me during my journey. First, I would like to mention my husband, John, and daughter, Madeline, for all the support they have given me through my entire yoga journey and for encouraging me to go for it. John has such wonderful ideas of what I can do to expand my business and I appreciate his insight. Both of them have been wonderful and patient as they are my practice students as I am learning new things and techniques continuously. Second, I would like to say thank you to my teachers, Wendy and Robb, who have taught me so much and have remained friends after we all three moved from the Kansas City area. Wendy and Robb provided so much information during my 200 and 300-hour teacher trainings. They gave me wonderful feedback during my learning process and shared wonderful resources I still use today. Amanda McKinney has been the best cheerleader for me as my accountability coach. She has challenged me to expand out of my little box and has helped me grow my business more than I could have imagined.
