Today we’d like to introduce you to Sunny Dublick
Hi Sunny, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I like to call myself an accidental entrepreneur. I have been working in marketing in the greater Philadelphia area for about 10 years, bouncing back and forth between the agency world and corporate marketing. It was hard because I loved marketing and that merger of art and science; I always disliked who I did it for. I was in panic mode when I was laid off, but I remember interviewing for other positions and feeling unmotivated. They say the definition of insanity is repeating the same thing and expecting different results- I kept feeling like another job wasn’t the answer. I always thought how cool it would be to have my own business, and I was so lucky to have people around who supported me, helped me set up my website, and referred me to my first clients. If I am honest, it started with, “I’ll do this until I find a job I love,” it turns out this was it for me. My business has grown significantly over the years, from offering everything under the sun to really focusing on what I love and do best: brand strategy and marketing planning.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
If my career were a line chart, it would go up, down, left, around in a loop, off the chart, and back again. We always think of success as this destination; I’ve had to toss that out the window. For the longest time, it was success based on what other people were doing- was I keeping up? Then, it was success based on several clients or revenue- it never made me happy or feel good. So, I started measuring success by how glad I am doing my work and how much I can impact the people around me. It makes the highs and lows much more accessible to the weather. Some of the struggles: Where do we begin? I eventually gave up my business because I was so exhausted- I burned myself out and took a corporate job. About 2 weeks in, I knew I had made a mistake, and a little over 2 months later, I was back at SDM. Other than that its the same struggles any business owner faces- managing client expectations, vendor quality, your time and sanity. It is all a mental game.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I own Sunny Dublick Marketing, a strategy studio focused on providing insight + innovation to the marketing field. I push the boundaries of traditional marketing thinking to inspire my clients to create the aspirational brands of the future. So much of what we think about marketing today is emails, ads, social media, SEO, etc. I don’t do any of that- I am the person you should talk to before you do and waste time & money on marketing that doesn’t work for you. The premise of my business is that great marketing is based on human connection- I start any engagement by talking to your employees and customers and getting their perspectives so I can provide you with strategies that I know will work- not based on speculation or fleeting trends. From there, I provide brand strategy- which outlines what we say, who we tell it to, and why, followed by a marketing plan that is your blueprint for success. My process helps you start attracting business- instead of chasing it.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
How can you not love Charleston? What I like best is the nature and wildlife. It’s so different from where I am from (New Jersey). What I dislike the most is the traffic.
