Inspiring Conversations with Jen Vax of Your Color Style

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Vax

Hi Jen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
The year I turned 40, I found myself at an all-time low. I was recently divorced and living on my own for the first time in a very long time. I was still healing from losing my oldest daughter to cancer (age 9) about a year ago. I didn’t recognize the person in the mirror. I had a deep sense of loss. Loss of my daughter, my marriage, and myself. Who was I? I was lost.

I started on a journey of improving my appearance. I realized that my wardrobe had become a reflection of the past rather than a celebration of the vibrant person I am today. It lacked color, like my life and sense of self.

It was during this time that I discovered color analysis. I became obsessed. As I learned what colors flattered me, my confidence grew. Wearing the right colors wasn’t just about looking good – they profoundly impacted my confidence and how others perceived me. This discovery didn’t just transform my wardrobe – it transformed how I felt about myself whenever I stepped out into the world. The more I chose colors that flattered me and made me feel good, the more confidence I had in myself.

I followed my obsession with color analysis and became certified in 3 different methods. I started offering color analysis online. I was attracting women in midlife who were frustrated with their appearance and didn’t fit into the neat categories of seasons. They had gray hair, brown skin, olive skin, and unique tones. Working in seasonal color analysis confused them, and I needed to customize their colors.

I put on my artist hat and created my own color palettes and methodology based on color theory. I systemized the color analysis process. Your Color Style was born. I have perfected our online color analysis process to be as accurate as an in-person color analysis. The color palettes are flexible and can be customized to accommodate a person’s unique coloring. We now offer color fans, color analysis services, and a color consultant certification program.

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wanted to offer online color analysis. Starting was rough because I received many photos that usually needed better lighting. In the beginning, I used the colors from seasonal color analysis, but I didn’t have any control over the colors. My color analysis results were only sometimes accurate, and I was discouraged for a while. Once I created my colors, I could have more control over my process. I learned to give specific guidelines on taking selfies. I improved the process of virtual draping. I refined the colors needed to get accurate results truly. It took a while, but I overcame the stigma that online color analysis doesn’t work. As the business grew, the website needed more and more functionality. It crashed all the time. It was incredibly stressful. My husband and I would be on vacation, and I would wake him up at 6 am. Joe! The site’s down again. He was my only tech support at that time. I finally leaped and moved the entire site to a stable platform. Best thing I ever did.

I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Your Color Style?
I answered some of this in my previous responses. I am known for my expertise in color theory. I teach color theory, and my certification program is heavily based on color theory. It is essential to understand why a color works on you or doesn’t and why a person has a certain undertone. The more you understand the color theory of the methodology, the easier it is for a customer to make smart color choices and for our trained color analysts to offer accurate color analysis. I am proud that Your Color Style is inclusive. Our color analysis methodology works for all skin colors, hair colors, and unique combinations. We specialize in color analysis for women with gray hair and olive skin tones.

I have 2 books that were both best sellers on Amazon.

  • That’s My Color: Discover Your Signature Colors and Transform Your Life
  • Great With Gray: Discover Your Most Flattering Colors To Wear With Your Gray Hair

I am proud of my certification program. It is an opportunity to help women create their businesses.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My husband, Joe, has supported me from Day 1. He is always happy to discuss ideas and problems and is my rock when things aren’t going well.

My business coach, Phil Black, started as my life coach, and when I decided to create Your Color Style, I hired him as my business coach. We have met weekly for the past 6+ years. He asks the right questions. Challenging questions. It always has me thinking, pushes me, celebrates our wins, and guides me from being a solopreneur to a company owner.

My operations manager, Sharon Booker, has worked for me for the past 6 years. Thanks to Phil for pushing me to hire and delegate. She has now become integral to Your Color Style. She runs all the workflows, customer support, and anything else I need help with. She is proactive and intelligent and gets it. She’s fantastic, and I am so grateful for her.

My partner, Gail Scott, joined Your Color Style a year ago and has added Style and Beauty to Your Color Style. We are now a full-service company offering color analysis and styling. She always has many ideas, is a great sounding board, and is driven. It feels so good to have a partner in the company now.
