Today, we’d like to introduce you to Tamicka Walker.
Tamicka, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey in education goes back as early as my childhood days when my parents always told me I “taught” my teddy bears and doll babies. They said, “I know she’s gonna be a teacher”.
I can truly say as an adult it is innately in me. I believe it’s a gift from God. Even though it’s a gift there’s been endless times of disappointment but He intervened. Fast forward to today where I am now a classroom teacher and owner of an education business.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road indeed was not as smooth as I would hope. From not being able to pass the Praxis exam not once, twice BUT 5 times… to graduating college with a totally different major.
At that time, I gave up hope of being an Educator until I was encouraged to try again and then I went back to get my Master’s in Education… and finally I obtained licensure to teach! A lesson learned from this experience is, that delay does not mean denial.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe you can tell us more about your work next?
I am currently a 2nd grade teacher and the owner of Education Excelling, LLC. I am most proud of helping change the narrative of education.
My belief is that people can excel in whatever they set their minds to, provided they are equipped with the right tools and afforded the opportunities to do so. Inspired by the scripture Philippians 4:13, ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. My business specializes in tutoring, test-prep services for students and educators, and S.T.E.A.M enrichment days.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My biggest advice for someone just starting out is to persevere! The education journey is not an easy one but it is indeed rewarding.
