Meet Shaquela Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaquela Brown.

Hi Shaquela, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Shaquela Brown and I’m the owner of Boost My Ego Hair. I’ve always been one to keep up with my appearance. I absolutely love self-care days, which include getting my hair done, and came across the idea of starting a hair business back in undergrad. It was my freshman year, I had no money, no vendor, no plan, but I knew what I wanted to do and how I wanted to do it. I knew I wanted to make women feel how I felt when I got my extensions in the mail and my appointment was approaching. Years passed and I had several launch dates and I couldn’t seem to get it together, things would just never fall into place. I had already finished undergrad and was looking to finally start my business. I had a few setbacks and in 2021 after deciding to launch on my birthday and failing to do so, I knew then that was going to be the last time I was going to let anything or anyone stop me from starting my business. I saved and spoke with my family about my plans and everyone was on board and helped as much as possible, I couldn’t thank them enough. In April of this year, I finally launched and I’m looking forward to expanding my business and becoming a well-known businesswoman. I have no idea where it may take me, but I know my business is going places outside of SC.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth process. I’ve struggled with being patient and just waiting on my moment. I think things never worked out until now because it just wasn’t my time. I remember setting my launch date for April 2021 and not being able to get wigs because of COVID and the lace shortage they were experiencing overseas. I gave it a rest for a few months and then decided to launch that September around my birthday. I failed once again because my site or business cards weren’t made or even anywhere near finished. I definitely wanted to give up after that because it was all planned out and still didn’t work. When you want something bad, you just have to keep trying. My time came and it is now!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m currently a grad student pursuing a master’s in health administration and running my business. They don’t correlate at all, but I’m helping individuals in both, which is my main goal. My extension business specializes in providing virgin hair wigs and bundles. I’m mostly proud of how well I executed my business idea and how I promote myself and my business to the public. What sets me apart from others is how genuine I am and my strong mind. To know me is to love me! I love genuinely supporting and uplifting others around me, my intentions are always pure. I am a leader and always have been. I do my own thing and I’m my own person. When my mind is set on something, I get it done no matter how long it may take. My drive is beyond some my age.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
When running a business, you most definitely have to take risks, risks you may not even want to take. You take risks on spending, not knowing if you’re going to make your profit or even get customers/clientele. I wholeheartedly believe that God will always make a way, I take risks and I leave the rest to him. I shouldn’t worry if I already have faith that things will work out and I’ve given it to God once I’ve done my part.
