Meet Nichoel James of House of James

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nichoel James.

Hi Nichoel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my career in a traditional 9-to-5 role, working on projects that didn’t inspire me or align with my values. I often felt like just another number in a corporate system, helping the company grow, but not growing myself. Over time, I realized I wanted something more meaningful: the freedom to choose the clients I work with, the flexibility to enjoy life outside of work, and the chance to make a real impact through my work.

That realization is what led me to start my own business. I wanted to collaborate with clients whose missions I truly believed in because when I’m passionate about what they do, it’s easy to tell their story and help others see their value too.

Building my business has given me the work-life balance and fulfillment I was looking for. I get to decide which projects are the right fit for both sides, and I wake up every day genuinely excited about what I do. Two years in, that feeling hasn’t changed. I love the creativity, the relationships, and the purpose that come with running my own company.

I don’t see what I do as a job, it’s something I’m passionate about. I don’t keep normal hours. If a client has a question at 10pm I am there, if an idea strikes at 2am I am diving in, if the surf is good a 2pm on Tuesday I am gone. I’m fully invested because I truly enjoy what I do but I also have the flexibility i’ve always craved. I’ve also been able to use my skills to give back by volunteering with nonprofits I care about, which has made the journey even more rewarding.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, I faced a lot of uncertainty in the beginning. Even before I started, I worried about walking away from the security of a steady paycheck and benefits. But I eventually realized that job stability can be an illusion. Losing a job or being laid off can happen just as easily as a business idea failing. That perspective gave me the push I needed to take the leap.

Early on, I took out a loan I wasn’t fully prepared to repay, and I struggled to find clients. I spent a lot of time reaching out to prospective clients, trying to convince them to take a chance on me instead of a large, established company. It was challenging to talk about my business with confidence without feeling like I was bragging. I also dealt with imposter syndrome and the tough lessons that come with learning who’s genuinely interested in working with you versus who just wants free ideas and insight.

Every one of those challenges became a learning experience. I’ve learned how to identify the right clients, set healthy boundaries, and communicate my value in a way that feels authentic. The road hasn’t been easy, but each obstacle has made me stronger, more self-aware, and more intentional about how I run my business.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My business, House of James, is a boutique marketing agency that specializes in content creation, copywriting, and event marketing. I also offer web design, photography, and videography, which allows me to take a full-service approach to every project. I like to be completely immersed in the work I do. That means going onsite to capture photos and videos, editing and curating the content myself, and crafting the words that bring a brand’s story to life. My clients don’t have to juggle multiple vendors or worry about coordinating creative pieces, I handle everything from start to finish so their message stays consistent, authentic, and impactful.

What truly sets House of James apart is the personal investment I put into every project. I don’t just create content; I build relationships. I take time to understand each client’s mission, voice, and vision so their story shines through in every detail. I want my clients to feel like they’re collaborating with a friend, someone who’s just as excited about their ideas and success as they are.

Giving back is also a big part of what defines my brand. I dedicate time to supporting small businesses and nonprofits that might not have the budget for professional marketing but deserve to be seen and heard. One organization close to my heart is Wind Sports for Wounded Warriors, a local nonprofit that serves veterans through wind and water sports. I donate my services to help them share their mission, so they can focus their resources on what truly matters—the people they serve.

I’m proud that House of James has remained small, intentional, and community-focused while still delivering high-quality, creative work. Working with me means more than hiring a marketing agency, it means having a partner who genuinely cares, collaborates closely, and brings both creativity and heart to every project.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My best advice is to connect with as many people as you can and approach networking without competition. There’s always enough opportunity to go around, and the right ones will find you when you’re authentic. Focus on building real friendships, supporting others, and letting things flow naturally; that’s where the best connections happen.
