Today we’d like to introduce you to Mandy Owens.
Hi Mandy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
While working as a Mother/Baby RN at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland between 2004-2007, I found myself wanting to give families more with regards to education, postpartum care and newborn care. I often had moms say to me, “I wish we could take you home with us” as I was walking them out to their cars upon being discharged from the hospital.
I started Annapolis Baby Consultant (ABC) in 2013 working independently the first 2 years. By 2015, I needed a team to keep up with the demand of clients. Upon moving to Charleston in March of 2019, I started Charleston Baby Consultant (CBC), which was a replica of ABC. After 7 successful months of business in theLowcountry, I made the decision to merge ABC and CBC to form Your Baby Consultant (YBC). We currently serve clients in Annapolis, MD, Charleston, SC and Greenville, SC.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part yes, as I am doing something that I truly love. It was a learning curve on the business side as my degree is in nursing, not business. I quickly learned to outsource aspects of my business to professionals when I lack the expertise. In particular, accounting and management of social media accounts.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Your Baby Consultant (YBC) is a team of Registered Nurses, Newborn Care Specialists, and Postpartum Doulas in Annapolis, MD, Charleston, SC, and Greenville, SC who help families transition as they bring their baby/ies home. We provide private, in-home daytime, overnight, date night, 24 hour and travel care for families and baby/ies up through 12 months of age. In addition to providing private baby care, we also teach breastfeeding and newborn care classes, sleep train, offer breastfeeding consultations, and offer phone and Zoom calls to families needing a guidance on baby care.
YBC is known for is flexibility with scheduling and hours. Every family is different and there isn’t a one size fits all for what is needed the first few week, months or even year after delivery. We strive to accomodate each family’s needs as best we can.
I am most proud of the team that I have built in each location over the past 12 years. It is of utmost importance to me that every team member I hire provides exceptional, high quality care to each and every family we work with.
What sets YBC apart from other agencies is I as the business owner personally work with our families. I will always fill-in if a scheduled team member is sick or taking some time off. Providing continuous care without interruptions in staffing is another reason why I feel YBC is well regarded the communities we serve.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t consider myself an especially lucky or unlucky person. I have learned that how you respond to bad luck can be a growth opportunity if you allow it. You can create your own good luck through hard work- a principle that has been central to my success both personally and professionally.
