Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Roberts.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in the backwoods of Florida, a little south of New Smyrna Beach, surrounded by large oak trees and an abundance of wildlife.
It was a much simpler time and I carried that inspiration and love of nature with me as I moved through life.
As an adult, I gravitated naturally to the beaches along the coast all the way up to South Carolina. I have now lived in Pawleys Island, SC for twenty-one years and cannot imagine leaving anytime soon.
The beauty of Coastal living combined with my love of nature has always been a driving force in my creativity. My work, both in pottery making and Woodburning, is inspired by the natural colors, textures, and patterns in the beauty that surrounds me. I create one-of-a-kind pieces that I hope will stand the test of time and are worthy of being treasured by their recipients.
For me, it is a culmination of careers and life experiences that have led me to where I am now creatively. I am always trying to think of new ideas and challenge myself to take my art one step further. Making Art is my therapy, job, and true passion. I take much pride in sharing my work and passion with others.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Transitioning from a full-time career in Graphic Design to becoming a full-time Mother was my biggest but most rewarding challenge.
It was a somewhat natural progression as my child got older to gravitate back to making things with my hands, heart, and soul.
It has not always been easy having the confidence to put my work out into the world for public view but I have found that sometimes you just have to follow your dreams knowing that what really matters is making yourself happy.
Just like everything in life – it takes work to be successful.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create many types of art using many different mediums. My main focus is ceramics/pottery, both wheel thrown and handbuilt, and I am constantly inspired by the ocean and also patterns I see around me. I work out of my home studio, where I create and fire my own pieces.
My second passion at the moment is Woodburning. I use an electric process known as Lichtenberg to create deep burns on wood and the natural burn patterns inspire what the piece will become. I have developed a method of creating dimensional effects on wood using a handheld burn pen, pigments, epoxy, and paint.
I am honestly always proud of every single piece I make and it always humbles me in a way when I look at a completed piece. I can only hope that people who acquire any of my work will see all the life I have put into every detail.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
A wild and active imagination, perseverance, dedication, and the ability to challenge me creatively.
