Hidden Gems: Meet Sarah Haynes of Trendy Moo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Haynes.

Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
2018: I started my boutique in Boones Mill, VA after graduating from Virginia Tech with a degree in Fashion Merchandising and Design. I loved clothes and boutique shopping, but at 22 I found the boutique price points really difficult and felt like I couldn’t find the styles I was looking for in most fast fashion, big box retailers.

My goal when I first started was cute, unique clothing at the lowest price point I could find them. I was operating from my parent’s house out of my bedroom! During this time I also picked up freelance jobs for extra cash & to utilize it as an opportunity to learn more about e-commerce and the fashion industry.

2019: I moved to Charlotte NC and was able to continue and expand my business. I attended my first vendor markets/pop-up shops and hustled hard to sell clothes. During this time, my now husband also joined in on the fun! He is an extremely talented designer, mainly with a focus on footwear during this time, but started dabbling in leather goods. We started including a line of leather wallets and bags for Trendy Moo and it was quite fitting for the name of the business. I also worked part-time remotely as a customer experience agent for supplemental income.

2020 – 2021: The business made it’s way back to Virginia, this time in Roanoke! My part-time job turned into a full-time job and I knew having a steady flow of consistent income would be the only way I would be able to maintain or grow my own business. Of course, during that time period, it was hard to sustain both and I let my business hit the back burner for a bit. I phased out the clothing during 2021 and primarily put focused on leather goods for the year. The overhead was way more affordable and I loved the fact that we were locally hand-producing great quality bags.

2022: We moved AGAIN! This time to Summerville, SC. I took January – August and shut down my shop to give myself time to think through where I wanted the future of Trendy Moo to go – and of course, time to do all the fun paperwork in another state. A lot had changed over the last 4 years, my personal style, my view of the fashion industry, and this aching to sell clothes again.

I felt like I had changed the direction of my company 1000 times and was nervous to change the direction yet again and give it another go. I continued to have this passion and fire in me to make this work and create the brand I have always wanted so I said here we go again!

I spent months researching brands, creating a new business strategy, and defining the values and goals of Trendy Moo. I wanted to stray away from the cheaply manufactured clothes and the constant need to have new arrivals every week and focus on great, quality, capsule pieces that I stood behind and felt confident in. This is where we landed:

Trendy Moo is a highly curated collection of clothing & accessories for the modern woman who wants to look classic and polished with a trendy flare. We focus on quality, key capsule wardrobe pieces that will work for any lifestyle. We strive to empower women to feel confident, beautiful, and worthy!

We launched our new limited capsule collection on September 1st. We cannot wait to connect with the Charleston community and see what happens with Trendy Moo next!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would be lying if I said it has been a smooth road. There have been some amazing moments like huge vendor events selling through your collection and connecting with so many people and other weeks with zero sales. Small business ownership is feeling like a boss and like you are ready to leave your full-time job for 2 hours and the next 2 crying questionings everything haha! Time and finances have been the largest struggles for me and finding the balance between vision and reality.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Trendy Moo?

I don’t want to just sell clothes, I want to have a community of fashion-loving women who lift each other up, give each other styling advice, and can uniquely express themselves through how they style our products. I want to encourage other women to go after their dreams even when it isn’t easy and do whatever sets their hearts on fire.

Community and connection are extremely important to me and I encourage everyone to reach out personally if they want advice on styling, have specific questions about the products, or just want an opinion on sizing. I am here for you! I am extremely proud to say all of our leather products are made in Summerville, SC. My husband hand makes all of the products!

What makes you happy?
My family, friends and my pup Mylo make me happy. Also, I am a huge foodie so trying out new restaurants makes me happy as well!
