Daily Inspiration: Meet Ash’ur Washington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ash’ur Washington.

Hi Ash’ur, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey with hair started in 2013 as a freshman in college, where I attended Allen University at the time. My two other siblings and I were all in college at the same time, so it was an expense to support each one of us throughout schooling. I decided to help cut costs by doing me and my older sister’s hair while in school, as well as other friends I had during that time.

By the time I was a junior in college, my skills had enhanced and I knew I wanted to pursue hair full time, but I wanted to complete my undergrad first. Completed college in 2018 and started beauty school at Kenneth Shuler School of Cosmetology in August of 2019.

In 2021, I completed beauty school and got my licensure to be a cosmetologist. I love what I do and making others look and feel beautiful through the many services I provide in the hair sector of cosmetology. This is the best decision I could have made for myself and my life.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It is most definitely not an easy road working for yourself and starting your business. It takes time to build clientele and when it seems like things are not progressing, you still have to be positive. Once you start thinking negatively about everything, you will feel Ike giving up because it breaks down your confidence.

Starting out, I expected people to take me under their wings to help because I was new in the professional world, but that didn’t happen unfortunately. I had to figure things out for myself. It just made me more motivated to prove to myself that I can do it with or without help from others.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a licensed cosmetologist. I specialize in natural hairstyling, wigs and weave extensions, braids, locs, and coloring. I am most known for customizing and coloring wigs, and butterfly/distress locs. What I am most proud of is that I have not given up on my dreams and how much I have evolved over the years when I first started doing hair. What sets me apart from others is the passion that I have for doing hair and I am unique in my own way.

What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future are to grow my brand more through social media for a bigger audience. I would love to be a traveling stylist going to different parts of the world and showing my talents. I also plan to get my instructor license to be able to teach others and introduce newer and trendy hairstyling techniques in beauty schools.
