Daily Inspiration: Meet Ashley Sturkie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Sturkie.

Hi Ashley, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Photography has always been my passion. I have loved being behind a camera creating art and memories that will last a lifetime. My grandmother was a photographer when I was a child.

I would spend every minute I could in the studio with her. I would spend hours arranging props and coming up with ideas for my next session. Before digital cameras, my family spent a small fortune providing me with disposable cameras.

I would take them everywhere. I remember my family asking me why I was wasting my film taking pictures of things and then when the pictures would get developed they would be surprised at how the picture came out.

They encouraged me from a young age to pursue my dream to become a photographer. Once digital cameras came out I was the “picture friend”. I was always getting my friends together to do some kind of creative photoshoot. I spent years behind the camera for fun.

As the years went on, friends and family kept pushing me to start my own business. I continued to do pictures of my friends and family but wouldn’t make the investment to start a business. They would post pictures I had done on social media and show their friends.

I would always get messages for a few weeks after saying how much everyone liked them and that I needed to move forward with my business plan. I was honestly nervous and wasn’t sure that I had the skills or the marketing experience to be successful.

This year, I took a leap of faith and upgraded my equipment. I started a Facebook group to advertise and it took off from there. I am still learning every day, but I couldn’t be more proud of how far I have come in a short time.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road has been pretty smooth. My biggest struggle has been my own self-doubt. Marketing is definitely my biggest weakness. I am getting better as time goes on.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love all types of photography. I am always expanding my shoots and creativity. I am willing to give anything a client wants a shot. I do a lot of family photography.

I think what sets me apart from others is that I am good at communicating with my clients. I talk to them before and during a shoot about their expectations. I make sure to capture everything they want while throwing in my own creative ideas and poses during the shoot.

I watch the way they smile and how they interact with me or their family and adapt the shoot to capture raw and beautiful moments in between posed shots. Those are usually the client’s favorites.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
No, I was not shooting during that time.
