Community Highlights: Meet Nicole Walker of Consulting with Science, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Walker.

Hi Nicole , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I first started in the mental health field, I had my sights set on becoming a psychiatrist. I was fascinated by behavior, but I noticed myself leaning more toward the physical responses and the science behind why people do what they do. Somewhere along the way, ABA found me, or maybe I found it; and it completely changed my trajectory.

Once I started my hours in the psychology field, someone introduced me to Applied Behavior Analysis. I figured I’d try it out, just to gain a little more experience. Well… I never left. I fell in love with it. The science, the impact, and especially the families. Even the “tough” ones became some of my biggest teachers.

I’ve now been a BCBA for almost six years (we’ll call it official this coming June), and in that time, I’ve worked with a wide range of families and providers. I noticed early on that too often, ABA was being done in a way that didn’t capture the whole picture, the play, the connection, the culture, the real-life skills. I knew it could be done differently.

So, I decided to create something that brought the fun back into the science. Something that dove into every side of ABA, not just the textbook version. Starting this business has been the most challenging and rewarding thing I’ve ever done. It’s pushed me, stretched me, and reminded me exactly why I do this work.

My mission is to change how families experience ABA. I want parents to understand their child, not just through goals and data, but through connection, culture, and genuine growth. The learners who come through my doors won’t just gain new skills; they’ll gain independence that’s built around who they really are.

I’m not done yet. This is just the beginning, and trust me, what’s coming next is going to be even more powerful.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not, but I wouldn’t trade the bumps for anything. Building something from the ground up, especially in this field, takes patience, and a whole lot of faith (lord knows I needed faith). There were moments when I questioned if I was really built for this. From figuring out the business side, insurance, policies; to learning how to protect my peace while showing up fully for families, it’s been a process.

One of the biggest struggles has been balancing the science with the humanity. ABA can be clinical, this balance took time to learn and even more time to build into my companies culture while being a Solo BCBA.

There have been long nights, hard decisions, and times I’ve had to remind myself why I started. But each challenge has sharpened me. It taught me how to lead with intention, how to trust myself, and how to create something that actually reflects my vision, not just another ABA company, but a movement that prioritizes authenticity, joy, and meaningful change.

We’ve been impressed with Consulting with Science, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Consulting with Science is all about teaching the learner based on how they actually learn, not just what the textbook says they should be doing. I like to say i blend science with soul. My approach focuses on understanding the child’s unique learning style and building meaningful skills through play, connection, and evidence-based strategies.

While the learners are at the heart of everything, the parents are the foundation. I spend as much time guiding caregivers as I do teaching children, helping them see their child through a new lens and giving them tools that work in real life, not just in session.

What truly sets my business apart is that I’m not just the BCBA writing the plan, I’m also the one on the floor playing cars, building towers, and celebrating every single “aha” moment right alongside the learner. Even as I grow and add staff, that part won’t change. I believe being hands-on keeps me grounded in the why behind this work.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Consulting with Science feels different. It’s personal, it’s fun, and it’s intentional. I don’t just work on goals, I prioritize building independence, confidence, and connection, whatever that may look like for that child. At the end of the day, it’s not about changing a child; it’s about understanding them and helping the world catch up to how they learn.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Myrtle Beach has this energy that’s hard to explain, it’s unpredictable, and always moving. I love that about it. There’s a certain warmth here, not just from the weather, but from some of the people. Now being near the water? That’s my therapy right there. The ocean has a way of reminding you to breathe and keep perspective, even when life or business gets heavy.

Now, on the flip side, Myrtle Beach can be a lot during peak season. especially when you’re trying to run a business and maintain your sanity. And I’ll be honest, sometimes it feels like the city is still catching up when it comes to resources for families, especially those with children with autism or special needs. That part motivates me, though. It pushes me to keep building something meaningful right here, where it’s needed. I had finally stopped trying to compare it to home which is New York, and actually open up to see what it could be.

So yes, Myrtle Beach definitely has its challenges, but for now- it’s home. And I’ve learned to appreciate the balance.
