Today we’d like to introduce you to Lontay Greene.
Hi Lontay, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Lontay Greene grew up in a single parent household in a small town in Anderson county. My mother worked hard to care for me and created as safe of an upbringing as possible for me. My community of love was lead by my grandparents, my cousins and lots and lots family and mentors to mold me. There were endless amounts of people that loved me enough to push me to overcome by circumstances. Sports got me into college and into the higher education space as a staff member and started my career. I started in Spartanburg and now I made my way into the community work space through the form of working for a community center. My passion has always been in serving others and I am glad to do it in whatever way possible. There is so much love that has poured into me to strive to overcome my inopportune circumstances that I have no choice but to strive for the very best. Lastly – My mother taught me to strive for better so that my children and those around me may benefit. My sole goals is to support my wife, my family, my community and those around me. I am so lucky to be platformed by the Dr. T. K. Gregg Community Center to serve and to make sure that my family’s efforts were not made in vain.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In short – no. I was faced with obstacles from growing up hearing about money problems from my mom, seeing family and loved ones in the community afflicted from drug addictions, having my house burn down when I was 5 years old, having family members die from gun violence, feeling isolation and so much more. Then college brought tangible challenges that stem from maturity, study habits and work/life balance. The challenges change but the responsibility to overcome them has not, as I will continue to do so in each avenue of my life.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work at the Dr. T. K. Gregg Community Center as the Director with a background in Higher Education.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Overcoming adversity. Adversity always awaits. Hold your head down and keep going!
