Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Jackson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m Jamie Jackson and I’m the owner of JJ’s Pop Shoppe.
JJ’s Pop Shoppe began when my long-term employer informed us that they were moving their corporate headquarters to another state and we could either move with them or leave the company when they moved. I decided not to move. I had a couple of years before I would be let go and started weighing my options on what I wanted to do next, which ultimately led me to be my own boss.
A little back story… I remember my kids coming home from a trip one weekend with some candy popcorn, and I thought about how much I used to love getting that popcorn at Haywood Mall when I was younger. On a whim, I said, I think I can make that. So I researched how to make it and was finally ready to test it out. I made several flavors and took them to work for my coworkers to taste test and tell me their thoughts.
I came home happy with the results and started thinking about what other treats I could start making. With my family’s help, we collectively decided on cake pops, because who doesn’t love cake pops. After months of creating recipes, taste tests, and many trial runs, I was eager to hear what people thought. Again, I took them to my coworkers, had everyone try them, and immediately started getting orders. This is how JJ’s Pop Shoppe was born.
My orders started as basic, dipped cake pops and quickly transformed into custom orders of all shapes, sizes, flavors, and colors. Over the years, JJ’s Pop Shoppe has grown more than I ever expected it to. Thanks to my incredible customer base that consistently spreads the good word, I have had many opportunities to grow my business; from vendor events, shows, and festivals to custom-making treats for customers all over the US.
Although cake pops are my best-selling item, everyone loves the candy popcorn and I will always have it available at various craft fairs and festivals, along with many other items that have made their way into the mix, over the years.
In addition to the continued business out of my home, I have been working on my shop on wheels. I am hoping to have JJ’s Mobile Pop Shoppe completed and out on the road later this year.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Learning how to sell, where to sell, and how to charge people fairly.
Heat is not your friend with cake pops, so there have been plenty of challenges in the summer with packing, shipping, and trying to keep the pops cool at craft fairs or festivals.
In the beginning, messing up on designs and wasting that money when having to start over.
Being mindful of not-so-trustworthy people.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in decorated cake pops.
Not only do I make sure my cake pops are cute, decorated or not, but I always make sure they taste good. I love to come up with new flavors for the seasons, not just your average vanilla or chocolate, but I will do summer flavors (key lime, strawberry/lemonade, pina colada, etc.) and fall/winter flavors (salted caramel, maple bacon, etc.)
I am extremely proud of the work that I can do on a decorated cake pop. I am a perfectionist when it comes to decorating a cake pop to look exactly like what my customer wants.
I believe that my dedication to giving customers exactly what they ask for sets me apart from others.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My attention to detail is what my customers want.
