Today we’d like to introduce you to Curt Stock.
Hi Curt, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started Martial Arts over 30 years ago. It was one of the few things I felt connected to as a child. It gave me confidence and a sense of belonging. The Martial Arts helped to put me on a good path in life and I want to see the same thing happen for others. I started Whitecrest Martial Arts for this reason. It gave me an opportunity to have the same positive impact on others.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road at all. Life will throw every curve ball it can at you. It took many years to get the school off the ground. From finding a good location to renting from the wrong people. It has been a very bumpy road but it has been worth it.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I teach a style of Martial Arts called Tang So Do. It is a traditional Korean style of Karate. My school is independent. There is no overseer to tell me how to teach my students or how much to charge. I keep the tuition affordable and I am upfront about all costs. We have been in the Fort Mill area for over 7 years and continue to grow. It has been a great move in coming to Fort Mill. It is a great area and is continually growing. I am most proud of my students. Many of whom have reached the rank of Black Belt. They earned it. It is not something that is given just for showing up.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Martial Arts has been around for centuries. The ideals do not change. With the advancements in technology and social media, people will have more access to information about the Arts. A long time ago, most people had no idea about the different style of Karate. Now, some will have more information and might be more selective. We must make sure our school is clear on what we teach and how we operate. It all comes down to the instruction. If they don’t like the instructor, students won’t care much for the style.
