Check Out Christopher Turner’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Turner.

Hi Christopher, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey in men’s clothing began in 1990 when I embarked on my career at Lourie’s, a well-respected men’s clothier in Columbia, SC. At just eighteen, I found my passion for this craft ignited, setting the stage for a fulfilling career. In 1995, I made the move to Los Angeles, where I had the privilege of working with the renowned design house Hugo Boss. This experience significantly broadened my exposure to the industry and deepened my understanding of fashion.

From 1995 to 2020, I immersed myself in the art of bespoke and custom tailoring. During this time, I held several roles, including Regional Tailor Shop Director, Assistant Store Director, and Head Designer & Fitter at the Custom Shop Shirtmaker & Tailor. These positions allowed me to serve a distinguished clientele that included celebrities, royalty, and esteemed professionals. Each interaction not only honed my professional skills but also contributed to my personal growth.

In the fall of 1999, I returned to Columbia to take on the role of Custom Clothing Director at Thick & Thin, a store located in the Vista. However, my journey didn’t stop there; within less than a year, I transitioned into a consultant and Regional Sales Manager role for Corbin, Ltd. While there, I was instrumental in developing their trunk show business featuring made-to-order clothing, and I collaborated closely with their head tailor on coat patterns and designs.

In the fall of 2021, I was approached by Lou Mastro, the Director of Custom & Bespoke Tailoring for the Individualized Apparel Group, with an opportunity to join their team. Over the following years, I gained invaluable insights into manufacturing, clothing design, and product development, all while establishing lasting friendships within the industry.

Encouraged by friends, family, and clients, I decided to launch my own label, C. Scott & Co. Custom. The brand evolved significantly over the next four years. I often found myself absorbing ideas from others, only to realize that I was straying from my original vision. In 2024, I took a step back to rebrand the company, carefully considering my designs, the tastes of my clientele, and my aspirations for the future.

To create a more personalized experience, I limit my annual client roster to just 200 individuals. This approach allows me to work closely with each client to design clothing that truly aligns with their lifestyle and personal style. While I have a specific aesthetic I enjoy creating, I also make it a point to guide clients away from trends that may be overly extreme.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Since launching Christopher Turner Couture, I have faced a number of challenges. Many in the southeastern United States may perceive me as the new player in the industry, which can lead to some uncertainty. I also understand that for some, the idea of investing in a wardrobe designed to last for decades can be daunting. My goal is to communicate the value of timeless pieces that not only enhance personal style but also stand the test of time. I am committed to guiding potential clients through the process of building a thoughtful and enduring wardrobe that reflects their individuality and quality craftsmanship.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I want to clarify from the outset that I am not a tailor by trade, though I possess some sewing skills. Occasionally, I have stepped in to make quick alterations for clients, but my expertise lies in clothing design, bespoke fitting, and pattern drafting. As a designer, my objective is to craft garments that resonate closely with the style a client desires while accommodating their distinct body measurements and unique stance.

Over the years, I’ve learned that the key to creating a flattering garment lies in multiple fittings during the pattern design and tailoring stages. This ensures that the final product not only reflects the client’s vision but also enhances their natural silhouette. That’s why all our tailored pieces feature fully canvassed construction, offered in three levels of make. Our shirts come in two levels, and every accessory is meticulously handmade. Each item is treated with care by a highly skilled team of artisans whom I have assembled over time.

At the heart of our work is a commitment to quality. I personally select fabrics from the most esteemed mills and merchants for my collection each year. The artisans who bring each commission to life bring decades of experience and a deep passion for their craft, all united by the goal of creating exceptional clothing.
I take immense pride in many accomplishments throughout my career, but my greatest source of pride is my family. Each member has achieved remarkable success in their respective fields, and their unwavering support has been instrumental in enabling me to pursue my passion for helping friends and clients move closer to realizing their best selves.

Christopher Turner Couture stands out by blending traditional tailoring techniques with innovative design, all grounded in my extensive experience since 1990. We specialize in crafting hand-tailored clothing that celebrates self-expression and individuality, serving a discerning clientele that includes celebrities and members of a royal family. Our meticulous attention to detail, personalized service, and dedication to fostering long-term client relationships ensure an unparalleled experience in quality and bespoke fashion.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Many people view me as intimidating because of my height and my direct manner. At 6 feet 8 inches tall, I’ve got a bit more weight than my doctor suggests. My serious look can seem imposing, but my community involvement might surprise you. Each month, I put in 60 to 90 hours volunteering. On Tuesday mornings, you’ll find me at Lexington Medical Center, visiting patients through the Pastoral Care Office. I also participate in disaster relief efforts, having recently helped those affected by Hurricanes Milton and Helene. Additionally, I’m involved in Bible education work. I truly care about people and make it a point to check on my neighbors during tough times, offering support to those grieving or dealing with illness, and lending a hand to friends and neighbors who are rebuilding after natural disasters.
