Today we’d like to introduce you to Gigi Colaiacovo.
Hi Gigi, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We lost our beloved Boston, Lola, suddenly to Congestive Heart Failure in January 2018 and the house just wasn’t the same without her. Our background for 10 years at that time has been in dog rescue so we sought out various Boston rescues to adopt another Boston. We were sadly disappointed when we were told we were not being approved because we owned large dogs and occasional have children under the age of 6 in our home through foster care. We were devastated because all of our kids loved Lola and she ruled the roost in our house!
So, left with no other option, we were forced to go the purchasing route. We bought 2 Bostons together that a woman needed to rehome due to a divorce. They were both not fixed and female was in heat when she arrived. 63 days later we were nursing 10 puppies! We quickly educated ourselves and vowed our puppies would be top quality and would ultimately help other dogs in need. That was 2018 and we have been producing beautiful Boston babies ever since!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest challenge has actually been with other rescues. They are only familiar with the standard platform of rescue, taking in dogs, rehoming them and raising their funds through fundraisers and donations. We feel we have combined the best of both worlds by providing families with well bred, healthy puppies and using the proceeds to help other dogs in need (not necessarily Boston Terriers). We do our best to explain our platform and do have rescues that understand our program but others can be really unnecessarily brutal! Just because we breed, we are the enemy. You can’t find a Boston Terrier in a shelter, no puppies in rescue and most that are in rescue have medical or behavioral issues. Families are extremely dedicated to the breed and usually only give up their Boston for medical costs they cannot afford so I’m comfortable with what we do and know it works very well.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We have been breeding since 2018 and going strong! We take pride in all of our dogs being healthy and happy and strive to own both the Dam and Sire to any litter that we produce. All are registered either AKC, CKC or dual registered AKC/CKC and are all JHC & DM, CMR-1, & HUU Clear through parentage. We also thoroughly DNA test all of our Dams and Sires for health and generic imperfections. We have established a reputable breeding program where we take into account the health of the breeding parents, standards, and temperament. We do not breed any dogs that are known to have any luxation, cherry eye or skin issues. We breed good quality Boston Terriers and are proud of our puppy lines and strive to help people acquire Boston Babies without them having to resort to buying from a pet store or puppy mill. Our puppies are very competitively priced and our adopters feel good about ultimately helping a worthy cause. We are proud of our breeding lines now and feel we have perfected what we produce and continue to enjoy our relationships with our families!
We are proud to announce that we are a registered 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Corporation. Herein, all Adoption Fees are tax deductible! Our program is not the typical rescue format as we combine the best of both rescue & breeding to raise heathy puppies which make families happy while providing much needed funding for may dogs in need and we are very proud of that!
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
We didn’t know much about Boston Terriers when we started but have fully educated ourselves on the breed and never hesitate to share our knowledge with families, whether or not they adopt a puppy from us, so that they will make sound decisions in the puppy they choose. We’ve learned to also explain our platform in as much detail as needed and then accept what the feedback is. We cannot please everyone and our program certainly doesn’t hurt anyone. If people choose not to accept our explanation, so be it.
We’ve also learned that the loyalty to the breed is amazing! Families always say that once you own a Boston Terrier, you will never own another breed. So true and beautiful!
